Free Crochet Patterns

free crochet patternsOne of our goals at LadyCat is to educate others on how to sew and crochet. We offer free crochet patterns in order for others to learn the art of amigurumi. As well as to learn how to make scarves, sweaters, and even Mrs. Weasley’s infamous coat of many colors. Each month we will upload a new free pattern that we either found on the internet or have created on our own. Any pattern that is not ours will link back to the original owner for you to follow them and review their work.

A majority of our free crochet patterns will be made off of JRPG and anime characters. We will also create seasonal patterns to celebrate the passing of the seasons. If you used one of our free crochet patterns, please tag us on Instagram @LadyCatFashion. We will repost our favorite ones to our feed and feature you in our story.

What is Amigurumi?

Since a majority of our free crochet patterns are amigurumi, we wanted to explain to you what that is. Amigurumi is a Japanese word that loosely translates to a small knit toy. These toys can be either crocheted or knitted and can be in the shape of an animal, food, object, or scenery. When you look at the root of the word “ami” meaning crocheted or knitted and “nuigurumi” meaning stuffed doll. So when you put that together you get the meaning of a knit stuffed doll. It is believed that amigurumi got its origins in Japan sometime during the dynasty periods. Many speculate that these knit techniques arrived in Japan through their various interactions with their trade partners. And it is widely believed that the art form took off between the 1600s-1800s while Japan traded with the Dutch. However, the first “actual” amigurumi dolls appeared in the 1970s and is widely rooted in the “kawaii” culture that continues to thrive in Japan to this day.

Amigurumi usually centers around the use of the magic ring technique where you work in rounds. It is one of the rare art forms where you truly build the doll from fiber to figure in a matter of moments.
